He’ll Give you Fever
Swooning over a crooner that IS the real deal.
By Dayna Mancini
Just when I thought “DJ Pauly D’s” appearance on “Jersey Shore” would forever have me and my fellow true Rhode Islander’s cringing about admitting to being from the biggest little – imagine actually answering, “Why yes, it IS part of Long Island!” – along came Tony Cerbo.
“Birds flyin’ high, you know how I feel…” A red and green light illuminate a tall silhouette, in a perfectly tailored black suit, crisp white shirt and black tie. We all turn to each other with a big smile and whisper, “I love that song!” “Sun in the sky, you know how I feel…” Then, the spotlight shines on him, and at that moment every woman in the room swoons. “Breeze driftin’ on by, you know how I feel…” It’s not easy to put into words what happens when you mix passion, talent, and charisma into one well put together package. Michael Buble? Frank Sinatra? No, it’s Tony Cerbo. Who, you ask? Well he’s been called the new standard in New England Entertainment, RI’s own Michael Buble, and this generations Frank Sinatra. And he lives up to every word with a humble thank you that leaves you wondering, does he know that he is *that* good? “It’s a new day, it’s a new dawn, it’s a new life…” And he is feelin’ good.
As well he should. I recently had the pleasure of attending “Home for Christmas,” the second show in Cerbo’s holiday series, held at the Post Offce Café in East Greenwich. Every seat in the house was filled, including (name drop alert) Michael Corrente, Lite Rock 105’s Tanya Cruise, and restaurant guru Steve Marra. Yet no matter who is in the room, Cerbo has a confident, commanding stage presence and nothing distracts from his talent nor distracts him from giving 150 percent to his performance. From the first note you can’t help but be hooked - for one thing you can’t look away once he flashes a smile and you catch a glimpse of those ol’ blue eyes (yes, pun intended). Yet it’s the intense degree of raw talent will keep you hooked for the entire show. If you’re thinking cheesy covers of Buble, Sinatra and the classics, think again. Cerbo has vocal range that rivals even the great Michael Buble himself. Which, with this particular show costing under $40 and including a fabulous 3 course meal and glass of wine, is slightly painful for me to admit - since I just paid a ridiculous amount of money for Mr. Buble’s upcoming concert, sans dinner.
But yet, I had to know, how good is he, really? So I took it upon myself to see him perform two more times, and I brought friends. What I found was each time it got better and better, and I watched as every woman in the room was mesmerized by this man. Cerbo has a range of songs from the classics of Sinatra to Billy Joel and on occasion even a Black Eyed Peas song mixed in. Both my male and female friends agree, this man has a huge amount of talent, presence, and professionalism. Thanks to Tony, I’m starting to feel better about being from Rhode Island, despite any misconceptions you may have from indulging in “Jersey Shore”.
He calls himself “The One Man Show” and if (when) you get a chance to see him perform, you will understand why. He is the kind of performer that shows up, gives 150 percent, and leaves it all on the stage – leaving everyone in the room wanting more. And at the end, there is no arrogance, no chip on his shoulder – just a humble thank you, the kind that you truly believe is sincere.
There is a new standard in New England entertainment, and that is Tony Cerbo. So congratulations Tony, and when you are hugely famous and touring the world, I will gladly pay ridiculous amounts of money to see you perform.
